Swallowtail Forest Farm

At Swallowtail Forest Farm, we manage a highly diversified orchard. Our primary products from the orchard are fresh, culinary Chestnuts and Pawpaws. We also grow lesser quantities of Persimmons, Pears, and other orchard crops, and we utilize alley cropping, an agroforestry practice, to grow certain vegetable crops.

what we grow

Chestnuts and Pawpaws

The primary crops we cultivate in our highly diversified orchards are Chestnuts and Pawpaws. We also grow other fruit trees, such as persimmons, and other trees for other uses, such as Black Locust for timber (posts).

Garlic and Winter Squash

We grow garlic and several winter squashes as focal vegetable crops. Our garlic is often planted within our existing orchards and tree crop production areas using the agroforestry practice of alley cropping.

find our products

During the 2026 season, from September through November, our farm can be found at the Bethesda Central Farm Market in Bethesda, Maryland. Currently, we are scheduled to attend Bethesda Central September 6th and 13th and November 8th and 22nd.

Our market dates for 2026 will be updated as they are scheduled. We also sell direct to consumer and to wholesale customers. We anticipate our operation to grow more and more into a wholesale operation over time. Contact us via email to inquire about pricing and availability. Due to limited availability as a result of the late April freeze in the Mid-Atlantic region, we will not be doing pre-orders for culinary and seed Chestnuts for the 2026 season.

We'd love to hear from you.
