Swallowtail Forest Farm
At Swallowtail Forest Farm, we manage a highly diversified orchard where we primarily grow Chestnuts and Pawpaws. We also grow Persimmons, Vegetable Crops, and other perennial crops. We utilize agroforestry practices and ecological farming principles in our orchard operation.
what we
grow
Garlic and Winter Squash
We grow garlic and several winter squashes as focal vegetable crops. Our garlic is often planted within our existing orchards and tree crop production areas using the agroforestry practice of alley cropping.
Chestnuts, Pawpaws, and Persimmons
The primary crops we cultivate in our highly diversified orchards are Chestnuts, Pawpaws, and Persimmons. We also grow other tree species such as Black Locust for timber (posts) and Oak species for shiitake bolt production.
Log-Grown Mushrooms
We grow shiitake mushrooms on logs underneath the shade of the forest canopy. Our woodland mushroom operation is integrated into the long term maintenance and sustainable management of the forest.
